As a senior citizen living in Apache Junction, Arizona, I have found the city to be an active place with enough events and organizations to keep me busy all year. Plunked down next to the Superstition and Goldfield Mountains, the town is named after what was the Apache Trail and U. S. Highway 60.
As a retiree, I can take advantage of the attractions in the area such as the Goldfield Ghost Town, a former prospecting town and now a popular tourist destination. The Active Senior Center, which is located within Apache Junction’s state-of-the-art Multi-Generational Center, is another place where I can socialize and have lunch with old friends or meet new ones. Their Silver Sneakers Program offers gym classes and health fitness for active seniors.
The city’s Ride Choice program offers a mileage reimbursement for their car and a driver to eligible seniors who no longer drive or they can receive a monthly cab coupon. This is so helpful to me because, although I still drive, I cannot see well at night, and the Ride Choice will reimburse me for a friend to drive my car with me. There are many parks and trails from which to enjoy the desert air, nature and the spectacular landscape.
As a museum lover, I can visit the Superstition Mountain Museum that displays artifacts and historical items from the region that dates back nine thousand years. The site covers twelve acres and I never tire of the nature walks and spectacular location set against the backdrop of the mountain.
In summer there are free concerts in one of the parks for everyone to enjoy.
