Katherine from Mesa ...
When my husband and I approached retirement, we decided not to stay in Chicago. We had endured too many cold winters to stay there. We love the Cubs and the entire baseball season, but we were looking for a warmer climate for retirement.
We decided to move to Mesa, Arizona. Our beloved Cubs hold Spring training there. We loved the idea of living in the city where the Cubs hold Spring Training, where the fans have a much more relaxed interaction with the team. The Cubs were the reason we started looking at Mesa, but the city has so much to offer that it became clear that it would be our retirement home.
We moved to Mesa about two years ago, and we can wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a lovely place to retire. Compared to Chicago it is a small town, but with over 450,000 people, there is plenty of activity, especially for active retirees like us. There is a very active arts community here. We have been to at least three of the museums here. Our favorite museum is the Mesa Historical Museum. But, we really like the outdoor sculptures downtown. There is a nice self-guided walking tour of the thirty-nine sculptures in downtown. There are several nice places to eat or get a snack along the walk. My favorite is Humpty Dumpty; my husband likes the Baseball Girl.
We have enjoyed the activities at the Red Mountain Multigenerational Center. There is a great indoor track where we walk almost every day. We also take advantage of the numerous fitness classes at the center; my husband likes the free weights. I have tried several classes, but Zumba is the most fun! This is a public facility, owned and operated by the City of Mesa, so the fees are minimal. There is so much to do at the Center I think we could go every day and still not get tired of it. In addition to the activities available to people of all ages, there are many things that attract retirees specifically.
There is an excellent medical community with wonderful facilities here. We have found a very good doctor to take care of our general health. We have been lucky not to need any specialists, but we are comforted that the medical community in Mesa is well respected and the facilities are excellent. There are lots of shopping centers and malls in Mesa, so much retail shopping that I don't miss Chicago at all! Sometimes we still browse the Mesa mls real estate listings on Saturday mornings, just to see what's around. We are so very happy with our home and our decision to come west.
There are also lots of nice restaurants to try out. We like the Southwestern cuisine, although it is different from what we were used to. We love the change! The weather is much nicer. There are mountains nearby, if we miss the snow. Our grandkids love to visit in the Winter. We think Mesa is an ideal retirement community. We love the arts, the activities, the shopping, the weather and the nearby mountains. Mesa is a great place to live! Submitted to: Mesa MLS Real Estate Listings
