Moving to Scottsdale this year was a big decision for my family. My husband has been serving our country for the past several years -- I really wanted him to find the perfect place to recoup from the physical and emotional stress. Our dream was to live in one of the amazing Scottsdale mountain homes we have lovingly followed for the past five years. Guess what -- we're living the dream!
We left military life and base housing behind forever. I thought for sure I would hate it here because it was desert. I couldn't have been more wrong. Now feels like we have lived like we have really found a home. I can't imagine wanting to live any other place then this "desert".
My family loves to go hiking and biking along the many trails in all the hills and canyons on our weekends. We have a daughter who is 10 years old, so naturally I worried about the schools being good and finding a decent after school program. There was no need to worry. My daughter absolutely adores her teacher and the after school program here is so fun for kids it makes juggling work and family so easy for us. None of that "But I don't want to go mom".
I also thought no longer living on a military base meant we wouldn't have as many chances for social activities or to makes friends, but now we are busier then ever. My husband and I played coed sand volley. So far my daughter has participated in track, played volleyball herself and wants to play dodgeball in December.
Through all these activities we have been able to meet so many wonderful people that call Scottsdale home. My husband is so excited about the Air Fair coming up and my daughter can't wait for the Halloween Fall Festival. We have never been happier in all the places we have lived then we are here in Scottsdale. It was really a great place for us to set down our roots. When my family and I moved to Scottsdale eight months ago from New York City, you can imagine the culture shock I initially felt!
However, we fell in love with Scottsdale because they have just as many things to do as we did in the city. I love the trolleys that take us to the mall, not only do we get to see the area but they're free. There are so many public events at little or no cost year round, from ArtWalk to local sporting events, and of course golf. We are really into fitness, and there are so many hiking areas, as well as sports/fitness centers and biking trails.
I guess my biggest surprise came in the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, and Center for Performing Arts. Not only are the prices affordable, unlike New York, but they also feature children's art as well. It's been a great way to introduce my children to art and culture. My favorite thing about living in Scottsdale now is I no longer have to cope with long, dreadfully cold winters anymore as the weather is beautiful all year long.
Even though we have only lived here for a short time, already Scottsdale is home to us and I am happy to say I didn't even have to give up my favorite things about living in a big city. Submitted: Scottsdale Mountain Homes
